About Joel

Joel Freedman, MA, LMHCA

I love helping people live more rewarding lives, and develop greater connection, trust and intimacy in their relationships.

I’m passionate about the benefits of counseling therapy.

I work collaboratively with adults and couples of all genders and orientations to deal with immediate concerns, deepen meaning and authenticity, confront difficult existential questions, and enliven their lives.

You matter! You will be a full partner in our work together. My job is to serve as facilitator and guide, assisting you to explore options and opportunities for understanding and change, and to discover and utilize your strengths to make changes in your own way.

I utilize a range of therapeutic techniques based on their fit with your needs as a client. Some common methods I employ include humanist, emotionally focused therapy (EFT), mindfulness based stress reduction, cognitive behavioral, and narrative therapy approaches.

I encourage transparency and honesty about the process of therapy, and many find my open, calm demeanor reassuring.

Services I Offer

I offer daytime and evening appointments for people 18+ and couples at my office, located in Seattle’s Green Lake/Roosevelt neighborhood.

Specially trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples, I enjoy helping adults develop more fulfilling relationships. I can also assist you in successfully addressing anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, career changes, cultural adjustment, grief, and aging related concerns.

My Background

I received my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from City University of Seattle in 2015. My undergraduate degree in history and political science is from the University of Victoria, BC, where I also undertook graduate work in history. I later studied law at Birkbeck College, University of London and trained as a mediator with the Dispute Resolution Center of King County in Seattle.

In addition to this training, I bring my years of experience as a community organizer and historian, work which involved legal, human rights and environmental issues, as well as recording oral histories. This background assists me in discerning both the bigger picture and the personal themes in peoples’ lives.

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC, WA Reg. LH60914094) in Washington State. I am also a member of several professional organizations, including the International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT) and the Seattle Counselors Association (SCA), where I serve as Treasurer.

I live in Seattle with my spouse and our backyard chickens.
